Our library

Welcome! The Maine Tool Library is a project of the Resilience Hub. It is a volunteer-run tool lending library in Portland, Maine. We operate out of a room at 224 Anderson Street generously subsidized by Aikido of Maine. When folks subscribe to the tool library, they join our team. Together we make this community resource possible: we each pay 75 dollars annually (or donate the equivalent in our time) and agree to the MTL Borrowing Policy.

When you join, it may be so we can help you finish your home and garden projects. After you’ve joined, you may find yourself compelled to help friends in your community finish their projects. All are encouraged to volunteer to staff the library. Learn how by stopping by.

Portland is just a little too big to know what we can borrow in all of our friendly neighbors’ kitchens and garages, so we’ve created a centralized resource that allows subscribers to borrow from it. This community resource allows subscribers to do projects that previously may have had too high of a start-up cost and support activities like permablitzs, where more than a single shovel is needed for a short period of time.
